Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is dealing with a tragic loss just days before the team’s season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. 

On Friday, the 28-year-old NFL star announced the passing of his father, Don Richardson, in a heartfelt Instagram post.

Watson shared a somber message on his Instagram Stories, writing “Rest in Peace Pops,” alongside a broken heart emoji and praying hands over a black background.

While Watson didn’t share further details about his father’s passing, the emotional post resonated with fans and followers alike, who expressed their condolences online.

Richardson was reportedly estranged from the quarterback for much of Watson’s life after leaving the family when the athlete was young.  However, it seems the two have repaired their relationship in recent years.  Despite their complicated beginnings, the death comes at a challenging time for Watson, who is preparing to lead the Browns in their highly anticipated game on Sunday.

As of now, it remains unclear whether this tragedy will affect Watson’s availability for the season opener, but his strength and focus will certainly be tested as he navigates this difficult moment both personally and professionally.  Watson is entering his second full season with the Browns after his trade from the Houston Texans.  However, Sunday’s game will be his first time back on the field since November 12th due to a right shoulder injury that required surgery and months of rehabilitation.
