AG Radio Welcome to the best night of your life
It was announced that former NFL MVP Cam Newton has signed with ESPN as a commentator, primarily for the popular sports morning show First Take. Newton’s debut is set for October 11, live from Tennessee State University, as part of the HBCU roadshow hosted by Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe. Newton has recently been in the spotlight for his Funky Friday podcast, where he’s shared bold opinions on various football topics.
He also contributes to the 4th & 1 podcast alongside co-host and videographer Newton Amari Collins. The former Heisman winner sparked debate when he referred to quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa and Brock Purdy as “game managers” on his show.
Newton’s football knowledge and communication skills make this a natural fit for ESPN. First Take regularly welcomes former players to share their insights, with Smith and Sharpe being key figures in fostering a “new media” environment. David Roberts, ESPN’s executive vice president for sports news and entertainment, expressed his excitement about Newton joining the network.
“Cam Newton’s addition to First Take brings an electrifying presence, enhancing our roster of top-tier personalities,” Roberts said. “His dynamic charisma, combined with the high-profile debates alongside Stephen A. Smith, will create compelling, must-watch television for fans.”
Newton’s debut on First Take is expected to draw significant attention, and it will be interesting to see how he holds his own alongside Sharpe and Smith tomorrow.
