Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is taking action against police misconduct following a recent incident where he was handcuffed during a traffic stop outside Hard Rock Stadium. According to a press release from his attorney, Hill has retained a legal team to challenge the conduct of Miami-Dade Police officers involved in the September 8 confrontation.
Viral body camera footage captured Hill being forcibly removed from his vehicle and detained over allegations of careless driving, just hours before the Dolphins’ season opener against Jacksonville. Officer Danny Torres, a 27-year veteran of the department involved in the incident, has since been placed on administrative duty.
Records show Torres has a history of disciplinary action, including six suspensions between 2014 and 2019, the longest lasting 20 days.
Hill’s attorney, Jeffrey Neiman, criticized the department for allowing Torres to remain on duty. “It is already clear that well before this incident, Miami-Dade County should have fired Officer Torres,” Neiman stated.
In addition to pursuing legal action, Hill and his team are urging Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which aims to increase accountability for law enforcement misconduct.
